At the “Aurum 1006 km race” – two drivers with mobility disabilities on the grid

Over more than two decades, the “Aurum 1006 km powered by Hankook” race in Palanga has seen it all – from famous stage celebrities behind the wheel to a race-prepared VW Caddy tackling the endurance marathon.

However, this year spectators and competitors alike will witness something never seen before in the event’s long history.

The entry list now includes the “RTW – Ready to Win” team, where two out of three drivers have mobility impairments. Darius Kliaudaitis, well known from slalom and rally competitions, has a mobility disability, while Vaidas Šipaila walks with a prosthetic leg.

The team’s third driver, Simonas Balčiūnas, says the team is highly determined, although significant work still remains to adapt the car to their specific needs before the start.

The team will be led by the highly experienced racing professional Paulius Urbonavičius.

“Juozuko lankai specially adapted the roll cage configuration for us to ensure easy access for all drivers. In addition, the car will be equipped with hand-operated pedal controls, special supports for the legs of the driver who cannot use the lower body, as well as an automatic gearbox that allows all drivers to perform efficiently,” explains S. Balčiūnas.

The drivers themselves – all experienced in motorsport – are actively involved in developing the car’s special control systems. Before the race, it is essential to ensure that everything complies with FIA standards and that the car can be driven by all three drivers, including in a conventional way.

For the race, the team has chosen a diesel-powered BMW 420d producing 250 hp.

According to S. Balčiūnas, once all the necessary equipment is installed, the team will dedicate significant time to preparation and training.

“We will train not only driver change procedures but also the work of mechanics, overall team coordination, and communication during the race. At Nemunas Ring, we will focus on long, uninterrupted driving sessions. We take this stage very seriously – the whole team must operate like a well-oiled machine,” he emphasizes.

The team members say their goal is simple: to prove that limits often exist only in our minds, and that talent knows no boundaries.

The 27th “Aurum 1006 km powered by Hankook” race in Palanga will take place on July 15–18.
