The Palanga’s Aurum 1006 km racetrack in the evening of Thursday was reserved for street racers: 56 drivers challenged themselves in Street Drag by Startline. Every race fan could take part in the event with his own car and many of them dared to try themselves. The drag race car park was full of various vehicles – Lamborghini Aventador, 1000 bhp Nissan GT-Rs and even a standard Opel Calibra and two Volvo FH trucks. Spectators, participants, the organizers have shared memories of those delightful 20 years that have passed. As always, spectators could chat with teams and check their cars from up close. Drivers got motivation from various speakers: singers, organizers and politicians.

As soon as the parade in Vytautas street has finished, Aurum 1006 km race drivers came back to the track, the first practice session has begun.

All teams were divided in groups and two practising sessions were organized. The weather conditions were perfect – dry and warm. All the teams did not push over their limits and just remembered how the Aurum 1006 km race track feels.

The official start of Aurum 1006 km race was in Vytautas street at Palanga on Thursday morning. 38 teams’ race cars have been parked across the street, but a vehicle in front of them all was a regular Kia Proceed. Its drivers Vitoldas Milius and Aidas Bubinas have started their own race: they’ll try to drive around Baltic Sea as fast as they can.

Every year in Aurum 1006 km race drivers come up with different challenges. Some years ago Vitoldas has driven in reverse gear for over 300 km. Last year the duo drove 1000 kilometres in and electric Kia Soul EV in 21 hours and 33 minutes.

Mantas Matukaitis šio dešimtmečio pradžioje įsiveržė į Lietuvos automobilių sporto padangę ir jau suspėjo užlipti ant daugelio podiumo laiptelių įvairiose varžybose ir susirinkti daugybės gerbėjų armiją. „Aurum 1006 km lenktynėse“ jis bandys suderinti lenktynininko vaidmenis dviejose komandose su skirtingais vairuotojais, automobiliais ir netgi taktikomis. Kaunietis moka derinti kelias užduotis vienu metu ir tą puikiai įrodė dar šiemet.

Gegužės mėnesį vykusiose Lietuvos žiedinių lenktynių čempionato varžybose M. Matukaitis šokinėjo iš vieno automobilio į kitą ir varžėsi net penkiose įskaitose....

Pravažiuojantys pro šalia Palangos esantį Vydmantų transporto mazgą jau bene savaitę čia stebi nemenką sujudimą. Šalia šios sankryžos plytinčiuose laukuose jau baigiamas statyti tarptautinių „Aurum 1006 km lenktynių“ festivalio miestelis, trečiadienį svetingai atversiantis savo vartus varžybose dalyvaujančioms komandoms ir jų sportininkams.
